the pink black hole

i truly believe that if you hang out w/Pinky, you will get sucked into the black hole of laziness.

on a random late night outing, i was hanging out w/Pinky at his place until the wee hours of the morning. fell asleep around 7 a.m. and woke up around 1 p.m. at which time, Pinky being hungry, we ordered food. we order from a Thai place (which only has VOSS water, which cracks me up. what delivery place only has VOSS water?) and sit around watching 2 Hugh Grant movies (Love Actually and Notting Hill. such good chick flicks).

sitting there w/Pinky, i realized what a giant black hole his place is. he definitely lives a life of leisure (per se). he doesn't have to go in to the store unless something happens w/1 of his sales girls so then what could he potentially do all day and which he did the day i was there? he wakes up, orders food, watches tv and talks online, gets "other stuff" delivered to take up more of his time (you gotta love NYC for that. just about anything you can conceivably have delivered can be delivered). he doesn't even have to leave his apartment ever. i actually asked him about that, b/c by the time i'd left (b/c i'd been in the black hole long enough) he still hadn't ever once stepped outside (and it was a beautiful day), and he admitted that there were full days that he never left the apt. that's mind-boggling.

on the way home i realized what made it stick out the most. Pinky's got a pretty hot apt (it was that muggy weather period) and when he woke up he basically opted to just trudge around the apt in his boxers. and he answered the door for all the deliveries like that (for the "other stuff" that's more reasonable b/c i'm sure when they get delivery calls at 4 in the afternoon they're pretty much suspecting that your apt's a mess, you have delivery food laying around and you're not going into work any time soon). so basically, Pinky can go whole days w/o ever having to get dressed. ever. i'm completely bewildered.

Cupid Shuffle

was searching for songs to listen to while doing my Corporations reading and notes and remembered this other tidbit of a hilarious moment when i was in Cali. In the car on the way to Hollie's Mischa was driving and trying to get everyone in the mood when he started to play Cupid Shuffle. i was sitting in the back between Margaret and Hen who all of a sudden started to go NUTS when the song came on. turns out they'd 1st heard the song when they went to Puerto Vallarta and had a great time dancing to it at some club. so all of a sudden both Margaret and Hen start doing the dance in the back seat. and i was still in the middle.

it was pretty funny being forced to do the Cupid Shuffle b/c the ppl surrounding me were doing it.

Tequila is my kryptonite

near the start of school (which now feels like AGES ago even tho it's not even the end of september yet), AABANY hosted their welcome-back-to-school event at Slate and as an APALSA eboard member, i felt compelled to go. plus there were free drink tickets and free food.
Adidas and i headed over together, worried that 1Ls would show up and not recognize anyone but we were worried over nothing b/c no 1Ls showed up. bastards. Chipmunk met us there and we all started playing pool, eating food and just generally having a good time. Oni and Husband showed up later along w/Prez, all some of my favorite ppl. we also met a very pretty half-German, half-Korean waitress named Sharon so it was an overall good time and nobody wanted to stop when the event was over.

so we went to ktown. what were we thinking?

i convinced everyone to go to Players instead of Third Floor since i like the anju that Players gives us and it's not as crowded but they still play good music. i was all ready to get the Johnnie Walker/Ballantine bottle deal but the Prez and Husband (both koreans) wanted the Patron Silver deal. and i totally caved. that's what happens when you date a korean guy for a year. you just compromise a lot instead of butting heads. i definitely didn't take many of those shots but at the end of the night Oni and Adidas were rocked and i was harboring a very strong buzz. we meandered over to Kunjip afterwards and ate some food and drank some more baek saeju and then all headed home. since we were 4+1 and the cabbie was giving us trouble bout it, i just hopped out and got my own cab.
on the way home i realized i was pretty damn rocked myself and promptly threw up when i got home.

Superbad

i'm sure you've heard all the hype already, but i just wanted to re-affirm for everyone that they should go and see Superbad. while i was home for Labor Day weekend, Debs called me up and asked me to go so we caught a 9 pm showing. aside from the hilarity of McLovin and the scenarios that ensue in a typical high school teen comedy (they go through hilarious hijinx in order to obtain alcohol for a party and ultimately reaffirm their friendship for each other) it's definitely the relatable little things that made me actually like this movie. Michael Cera (Evan) is the quintessential version of Debs' inner monologue which is also what made it hilarious. like whenever Evan would talk to a girl he'd always have this highpitched "hIIIIIII" or "byEEEEEE" which (if you know Debs) you know that's exactly what goes through her mind when she's talking to a cute boy she likes.

however, 1 word of caution. regardless of how funny this movie looks based on the PG-13 trailer, this movie's rated R for a reason. Debs and i made the mistake of taking my little sister and my 2 cousins to go see this movie (the 2 girls are in freshman high school while the boy's a sophomore in college). i felt like i was corrupting and traumatizing my sister and my girl cousin (and i really like my girl cousin was traumatized). the movie's just really raunchy and refers a lot to "fellaysh" and "vag-tastic voyage" if you get my drift. so just be pre-warned if you're gonna take any youg'ns.

also while i was home, i finally got to play Nintendo Wii. and i love it. i boxed, golfed, played tennis, bowled and even made recipes. so fun. except my arms and shoulders hurt the next morning. does that make me completely out of shape?

West Coast Love

yes, i was gone during the jewish holidays but no, i'm not jewish (as most of you know. or do you?). regardless, i got a great deal on Virgin America to fly roundtrip to LA for a 4 nights, 5 days. it was the most fun i'd had out of NY/NJ since Cancun w/Gohm but at the same time felt very down-to-earth since i was seeing Hen and Cousin and the g-rents.

1st, the airline. Virgin America is overall a pleasant experience. Jet Blue better watch out. the seats are just as comfy (leather) but the big draw is that they have an amazing touch screen located on the back of the seat in front of you. everything is touch: watch tv (their DirectTV is still a little shoddy. it was the luck of the draw what channels worked for you and at what time) and movies ($8 per movie, but some pretty good options including at least 4 foreign movies-Hula Girls, 200 Pound Beauty, This Our Exile, Heavenly Mission); listen to music (very similar to iTunes but costs nothing. and there's also a live radio option); even order food and drinks (snacks ranged from $1-2 w/typical fare of chocolate chip cookies, buffalo chips, fruit roll-ups and drinks were all free except for booze).there was also an option to play games (i stayed away from action and stuck w/anagrams and mahjong) and pretty soon you'll be able to shop and surf the net. overall the service is very promising. plus the whole attitude of the airline is obviously geared for our generation and younger. there's an option to chat w/other ppl on the flight through the touch screen and even the PA, when making the announcement for seatbelts and safety, ended it w/: "and so once everything's taken care of we're good to go."

Hen picked me up when i arrived and we headed over to his new place. Mischa was there (yes, i want to spell his name like Marissa from the OC. what what)and he's still w/Margaret which is adorable. they're such a cute and hilarious couple. 1 second they're fighting the next they're like "i love you". and man, if you ever see them dance...Hen's new place is conveniently located in West LA (as opposed to the Valley) but the old house was so much more spacious, particularly when it comes to bedrooms. Hen's room is so tiny compared to his old one. since i got in around 10:30 pm Hen and i just stayed up talking and catching up since it's been 2 yrs since i've been to LA to visit him.

the next day we went to Brent's Deli b/c Hen claimed it was the best NY deli in Cali. while yes, it's very good, considering i'm in Brooklyn now, going to a NY deli isn't really worth all the hubbub. but props to Hen for not overhyping the place. plus he really has a thing about those pickles, which they give you as soon as you sit down. it's kind of odd, but yes, those pickles are addictive. both the new and old (new being greener and not pickled as long). plus, this place did fries exactly the way i like them. super crispy. yummy yum yum.

afterwards we cruised Third street Promenade which was good just for the fact that i haven't done that ever yet. didn't shop/anything since there's nothing there that i haven't seen before but Hen also took me to walk along Ocean Avenue to see the beach which was nice. Cali's definitely got its weather going for it. it was fun just to be able to walk around outside on such a beautiful and sunny day. while there we decided to go and see 3:10 to Yuma since i've been pining to see it ever since i saw the commercial. we kept joking about whether or not theaters would be airing the movie at 3:10 since it was close to 3 at the time. alas, they're not. we decided to go to Century City Mall since Hen claimed they had a really nice theater. except they weren't playing the movie. so the attempt to see it was foiled. instead we sat and had drinks at Ummba Grill which has very nice outdoor cabana-like seating area.

for dinner we met up w/Cousin and Barishnokov at Yu-N-Mi for dinner. for the 1st time in history everyone was pretty much on time. and then we waited 45 mins to be seated. and unfortunately everybody was starving. i kept giving Hen dirty looks b/c i felt so bad for everybody else who had basically come to dinner just for me. on the plus side, we saw Pete Sampras and Bridget Wilson walking down the street while we waited. and inside we got to see Topher Grace (1 of the true loves of my life). we ate relatively family style aside from me ordering a sweet shrimp sushi (which was good) and Hen ordering a baked lobster handroll (which proceeded to fall apart as he ate it-which is why i don't order handrolls and which i'd just said prior to it happening). we also ordered a foie grais scallop tower, 3 sushi rolls and an uni box. overall good, particularly the more unusual stuff, but i think i was more impressed w/the number of celebrity brushes i had.

afterwards we attempted to go to Cabana Club for Cousin's friend's bday but the line was insane and it was such an Asian scene. while we made it through the 1st hurdle w/o waiting in line, the $20 cover that Hen and Barishnokov would've had to pay to get in was reedonkulous so we went to Lola's instead. ironic story: earlier that day, Margaret, Hen and i were watching The Hills and it was the episode where Lauren was saying how much she loved Lola's and we'd all been commenting about how that place must be so packed w/all the free publicity. and now coincidentally, that's where we end up. it was hilarious watching Barishnokov drink martinis but as it turns out, that's what Lola's is known for. i had a peach martini which was pretty good (i'm not actually a big martini fan anyways) and i really enjoyed the big piece of fruit at the bottom.

Hen had to do some work stuff on Saturday so i sat around watching pilots while he dropped of cupcakes at his boss' house (yes a little kiss-ass but hey, whatever it takes). i had the opportunity to watch Gossip Girl, Sam I Am, and Reaper pilots. before all of you. YEA!! plus they were all pretty good, even Gossip Girl, which i gotta admit i was so gonna pass on. i got hungry waiting for Hen so i'd eaten the leftovers from Brent's and also ate his leftover potato salad making sure to leave his pastrami-corned beef and his pickle alone in order to avoid getting dirt rubbed in my face (the unfortunate downfall of Hen's brother who had the audacity to eat his Brent's sandwich last time). when Hen got back we went to the Grove to walk around and windowshop where a saw a 3rd rate celebrity inside Barney's co-op but for the life of me can't place. but i will. it bothers me every time i think about it.

that night we went to Holly's for Hen's roommate Ben's gf's bday party. o yea, almost forgot, guess where we went to dinner beforehand: CPK. probably the only blight on the entire trip since why-oh-why would i want to go to CPK when i'm in LA? not that it wasn't good, just: i can eat that here. anyways, the party was amazing: great DJ playing danceable songs (gotta give props to LA for always playing good music vs. NYC lounges/bars. hello? enough w/the 80s rock. let's stick w/the top 40s and hip-hop & R&B); they'd booked the whole lounge for the birthday party; table service; and a nice little porch to go outside and smoke w/o having to actually leave the club. we stayed till closing (which is 2 am btw. i had no idea that LA nights end at 2. that's also kinda lame).

on Sunday Hen took me to the Pacific Palisades Farmers' Market which was really fun. plus we got to eat a little of everything and i love free samples. i'm still regretting not buying those marinated greek olives. instead i got some lemon almonds (surprisingly delicious and obviously a big seller), dried mangoes and a block of organic vegetable jack cheese. Hen got some kettle corn which i munched on and am totally regretting not having purchased too. we had brunch at a local place where i had an amazing southwestern eggs benedict (jalapeno cornbread, poached eggs, turkey sausage and black beans on the side).

later that day i went by the g-rents' in Rowland Heights, which is Asian mecca to me. bubble tea and chinese food up the wazoo. i love it. i haven't seen the g-rents in a while and while it was great to see them again, it was kind of sad. grandpa's gotten really skinny and grandma is at the beginning stages of Alzheimers. considering how vibrant they were from when i was younger it was upsetting. it's also incentive to go and see them as often as i can now while i still can. on the way back to Hen's Cousin took me by another non-fat pinkberry-ish place. i guess Cali's got the grasp on it since Pinkberry showed up there 1st and now all the original Korea transplants are popping up there too.

while Cali was awesome and i had a great deal to fly there, for me, nothing's ever for free. i made the mistake of leaving my digital camera in my checked bag and while in transit someone stole it. i'm so upset. particularly since it was a gift from Gohm and it was amazing.

minority mixer

one of the best events (and the initial reason i joined) of APALSA is the Minority Mixer. they started this tradition last year, where all the minority student organizations host a single event sponsored by Sullivan & Cromwell featuring food and open bar for 2 hours. it's also strategically offered at the beginning of the school year so that 1Ls haven't become jaded about going to all BLS events and are still wanting to meet new people and make new friends.

this year the event was at Apt 138. being older and wiser as a 2L, i didn't pay too much attention to the food and just focused on the open bar (after all, time was limited). but, as an e-board representative for APALSA, i did attempt to meet 1Ls. i made an initial sweep of the room looking for those obvious 1L characteristics (unsure demeanor, eyes darting from person to person desperately searching for someone they know/looks open and nice, and clumped together in an unmovable group). i did meet 1 group and chatted them up, extolling the virtues of APALSA to them. then i ran out of wine. so i excused myself and went to the bar. it was pretty much downhill from then. i never left my spot at the bar, although i did maneuver around the bar to various positions. Oni was WASTED and Husband was taking care of her. Coors showed up w/yummy chicken fingers. Adidas was milling around and meeting people while talking w/Wifey. then i chatted w/Co-Chair about upcoming APALSA social events and etc. this was all fine and dandy but then Institution chatted me up and it was all over.

once open bar was over and Apt 138 wanted to kick us out, the whole group shifted over to Trout. at this point APALSA was out-of-hand. and of course Trout was doing their shot-of-Jack-and-a-PBR-for-$5 deal so shots were flying all over the place. i found out that Prez (spelled w/a "z" now at Prez's request) is always the designated-walker-homer (he's always escorting ppl home) and he walked Oni and Wifey back to Feil. Oni's such a korean princess b/c she demanded that Prez walk her to her apt door even tho she only lives on the 4th floor. and Prez being Prez complied.
eventually everyone decided they wanted to go sing karaoke in Red Hook (how many times has karaoke been an option in the past month? weird...) but Institution was the voice of reason that Red Hook was just too far (ok, technically it's not, but when everyone's drunk enough to want to take a cab there it sure seems far). instead, we had another drink at Gravy where i picked up Russian girls while waiting in line for the bathroom (1 of which was having a birthday) before we went for food at a nearby diner. since i was the lone chinese girl amongst 3 korean guys, i busted out all the korean i knew and was adopted as an honorary korean by some of the toughest critics at BLS. i feel so proud...while also having a mini-identity crisis.

happy birthday Snoopy!

on a previous saturday, Snoopy was hosting a birthday party at Katra so i decided to go and check it out. i actually like Katra. yes it's a hookah bar. yes it's a lounge. but it plays good music and i pretty much always have fun there. i got a call from Oppa saying he would be going to BLVD for a co-worker's girlfriend's party (just repeat that twice and the relationship will click, i swear). Oni wanted to go dancing and had invited the Twins so we told the Twins to meet us at BLVD around 11 pm, figuring there might be a line and also that way i could leave to go to Snoopy's birthday after. so Oni and i head towards the F train while simultaneously frantically calling Coors who tells us she'll meet us at the subway stop from Henry Street. and then 30 mins go by. at this point Chipmunk's already called to tell me he's at BLVD and at the same time Oppa's texted me to let me know that BLVD's completely dead and they're moving to Katra instead.

when Coors finally showed up we found out it had taken so long b/c Coors had randomly broken her foot. ok, not really, but she had randomly developed this bruise-looking-thing on 1 of her toes although she didn't think she had banged it on anything. in retrospect i probably should've been more concerned about her injury (who knows? it could've been some poisonous spider bite or a sign of a serious internal infection) but i just pulled us into a cab and told him to take us to BLVD b/c i felt bad for the Twins who had been waiting at a dead BLVD for at least 30 mins. i'm not usually a cab person (b/c i'm so cheap, not b/c i don't want to) but you'll always know that you matter if i bothered to take a cab when i was running late.

we got to BLVD and finally met up w/the Twins who were pretty amicable about having to wait for us in a totally dead venue that was blasting dance music. we moved over to Katra which is luckily right next door. the doorman had already warned me that Snoopy was "looking sharp" and when i got downstairs i could see him right away b/c he was wearing a purple velvet suit. but hey, he's tall and skinny so he pulled it off. i've probably known Snoopy for about 8 years through Loveboat (no...not b/c i did it but b/c he met Cousin and i met him through her). we chatted and i introduced him to the crew and then i headed upstairs to find Oppa.

i gotta admit, it was so convenient to have Oppa and Snoopy attending the same venue but for diff events. very killing 2 birds w/1 stone. Oppa and his friends had gotten a table, bottle and hookah. the tobacco for the hookah was mango which was nice but the quality was so rough. i took 1 drag and then just stuck w/the vodka cranberries. Oppa and Oni seemed to hit it off (sort of) which set off its own mini-drama w/Chipmunk. i tried to stay out of it by hanging w/Casper and Coors and befriending new ppl like Sarah (who ironically was also there for Snoopy's birthday but knows Oppa through Boys Club. god, the world just keeps getting smaller and smaller). later Migs (who i always run into randomly) showed up so Oppa extracted himself from Oni and eventually went home.

me and the crew went home and played 4 am Taboo like dorks (Casper and i would make such a good team).

pseudo-date w/the Pres

on friday night i got to take it easy by checking out Stitch's friend's show, the Ahh Sum Band, at under_score on the UES. since i was recovering from the thursday night before, i appreciated Pres' offer to drive from brooklyn (Pres and Stitch know each other from BU. cue the it's a small world theme music). whenever i get to ride around in a car in manhattan, i really love it, up to the point when we have to look for parking. then i hate it. regardless, met w/Pres and got to check out his new apt on Smith St. (nice, understated, a little cramped. loft bed? i had to make fun of him for that). we made good time on the FDR and got to the show relatively on time. i actually really liked the music, the venue was very chill (and chilly), and the lead singer was hilarious. he had the tightest pants i'd ever seen (Stitch and i had a running bet whether her skinny jeans were skinnier than his) and the best rock hair that he shook around like a lion's mane for dramatic effect. such a rock band lead singer archetype.

afterwards Pres and i went to dinner at Dakshin for indian food since neither of us had eaten dinner. and so i got to know Pres a little better. we talked about past relationships and current affairs, weird dreams we have when we sleep, falling out of bed, etc. you know, all that getting-to-know-you-but-we-can-talk-bout-anything stuff (so the anti-thesis of Institution it's not even funny). afterwards we bounced to Stir and Sin Sin (after getting the wrong directions from Stitch and wandering up and down 2nd Ave, 5th Street and 4th Street) before just calling it a night and heading back to brooklyn. we hit traffic on the way back b/c Pres wanted to swing by the WTC site to see the lights (or did he just want to spend more time w/me in the car? wink, wink).

it was while out w/Pres that i realized how long it's been since i've been able to just comfortably and platonically hang out w/a guy 1-on-1. Egg doesn't really count b/c we just hang out at each other's apts and we're neighbors but we always go out w/groups. Gohm and i were obviously a couple so that also doesn't count. i can only think of Hen as the last friend i hung out comfortably 1-on-1. good thing i'm going to see him this weekend. it'll be super refreshing and nostalgic.

i totally freaked Pres out tho when he dropped me off. i turned to him and said: "this is one of the best pseudo-dates i've been on"

he replied with: "wh-wh-wh-what? um, um, um...wh-who? h-h-hu-hu-huh? y-y-y-yo-you m-m-mean ever?"

i burst out laughing and told him to calm down, i knew it wasn't a date. but Pres did look pretty scared for that moment.

Friday, September 7

an interesting night...

on another random weekend past i had a birthday party to attend at Park for one of the Boys Club. originally Casper and i were going to meet Yuka at a friend's house party but things ended up falling through so we decided to have a small pre-game at my place instead. i invited Bubby to come as well, as a sort of breath of fresh air (Yuka, Casper, Chipmunk, Oni and i were spending too much "us" time together on the weekends). Chipmunk and Oni were on a date so the rest of us drank some beers at my apartment before going out to Park.

Wifey had her own guest over. a mysterious man i believe she knew from high school and didn't want to introduce to me or the others. they spent all their time in Wifey's room which is adjacent to the living room me and the others were hanging out in. all of a sudden, i heard a very distinct banging on the wall. it was consistent. it was suggestive. i quickly ushered all of us to my room instead of the living room but the suggestion was already planted. o well, go Wifey. you get some ass.
we finally got to Park where i individually ran into members of Boys Club which was nice since i haven't seen them in a while. Pinky and his friends also ended up meeting us there which was another breath of fresh air from the usual crew. as always, Park was ginormously crowded and we were a pretty large group (Yuka had her international friends, Pinky had his boys, and Boys Club was milled around). while i looked for birthday boy to wish him "happy birthday" i let the others run free which turned out pretty interesting. Oni found a random to makeout w/ and another random to almost-makeout-w/, Chipmunk and Casper were stuck between entertaining Oni and meeting random girl friends. Pinky was a good staple/grounder to hang w/living up to the usual expectations of a good time.

after Oni's 2nd random almost-makeout i rounded up the troops and we were getting ready to leave. i was sitting at a table w/Pinky and his friends when i notice someone waving to me. it turned out to be Tweedledee of the Bobsey Twins! she was wasted sitting on a boy's lap and making out. she came over and gave me drunken love which was a giant surprise that i took w/a grain of salt but since then things have been more pleasant in the apartment between me and her so maybe she did remember the incident.

as always, i found myself in ktown w/about 12 people drinking baek saeju and samgyeopsal (6 orders!) and haemul pajun. that was fun by itself but i was so proud of Pinky for taking care of me and my friends. i always feel so proud when these oppas show their caliber and impress my friends since nobody else has really shown me they have the same.

more surreality-is that a word?

the 1st time i'd ever hung out w/Chipmunk was the night after Jones Beach. i actually mistook him for Casper initially. we all traveled to meet Pal at Delancey but Stitch had multiple friends coming so we were all arriving at separate times. i'd figured that Stitch would be coming w/Pan who was out to dinner but Stitch, adorable that she is, had rushed over b/c she thought i would be waiting there alone. of course, instead i was running late (damn traffic on the brooklyn bridge and that damn motorcycle parade going on on houston). i kept getting these hilarious calls from Stitch like, "where are you? it's scary here..." or "are you here yet? please?". it was funny but i also told the cabbie to step on it asap.

once we all congregrated in front of Delancey i got a call from Pal saying she was at Boss Tweeds instead b/c a private party had booked the entire rooftop for Delancey. so we walked around the corner to Boss Tweeds instead. it was kind of surreal to have Stitch and Um at such a BAR-bar w/me b/c the only times we've hung out were always nice lounges or places requiring bottle service. Um adapted pretty quickly tho once he found out how cheap drinks were. alas it wasn't meant to be and we headed over to Hotel on Rivington instead. Pinky and his crew met us there and i was already reeling from the sheer amount of people i'd amassed when i run into Tina and Meegs as well. that was a total coincidence but still... i was pretty much on random gathering overload at that point.
between saying hello to everyone and sneaking into the coded-guarded-keypad VIP section adjoining the main lounge the night was completely insane. eventually went w/Pinky to White Rabbit where they knew the bartender and got a free drink which i could barely finish at that point and then Pinky's friend hailed me a cab and i headed back to Brooklyn just as the sun was peeking out.
