the dilemma of an ex

i swear, i've had 1 supernatural ability in all my life. i'm not super smart/super strong/super fast but in all my relationships, i've been able to maintain friendships. i've never ever badly broken up w/an ex. i think that merits some kind of acknowledgement as a super power.

but Gohm might be the exception. i've forged through a lot of stereotypical thinking, but Gohm's is 1 that i can't seem to breakthrough. from the whole, "i've got to marry a korean" to now where "exes are not friends," i'm starting to think that he's affecting me more than vice versa. this is not a philosophy i subscribe to. relationships are sacred to me. that's why i don't have that many. and regardless of how things end (tho i've never had someone cheat on me) i truly believe that if they were significant enough for you to date, they're significant enough to be friends w/. they're a part of shaping me into who i am. no matter what, they'll always be important. my next relationship will reflect what i've learned from my last. but Gohm...

i understand that it's always easier to write exes off than to keep them in your life. they're a constant reminder of the lost; of what could've been and what to stay away from. and it's a lot easier to be angrier. but really? can you just discard a whole year or more of your life? that easily? of course, it's easier to discard someone once you've found somebody else. no doubt about that. and let's just accept that that's the natural evolution of life. if you're not destined to be w/that person, it's not like they're gonna be alone forever. somebody is destined for them. and when that fate comes along, you've probably lost them forever b/c as an ex, you're on the banned list of contacts.

but what if you're cool enough? what if you want to keep that person in your life? how? how do you do that? how do you keep an ex? not as a back-up or a what-if but as a person who has substantially contributed to your life and shaped you into who you are?

Bubby turns 25

as a non-related intro to the entry, i just wanted to discuss how much i'm loving fall tv right now. yes, yes, i'm a law student. how could i possibly have time to watch tv? well, this fact aside, i do watch a lot of it. after all, that's what i was born and raised on, being a latch-key kid and having super-Asian strict parents. i watched the premiere of Shot at Love last night w/Tila Tequila and i'm already hooked. 1st off, the girl's pretty damn hot right? and i'm dying to know is she gonna pick a girl or a guy? the girls are way more interesting right now tho i'm curious whether the butch-dyke ones will stay now they know Tila's bi. this show's just great for the Jerry Springer aspect of it and the previews show lots of fights and someone going to the hospital so i'm all about it right now.

ok, now on to the content. Bubby turned 25 (at last!). she's the young'n of our Smithie crew. we met up for drinks at Ginger Man Pub in midtown and i got to meet some of her work friends and Kiks and Shannon came too. the place is pretty much an after-work midtown bar w/lots of work-midtown types there. the impressive thing is the sheer amount of beers they offer. it's probably got around 200 options. being a fall, pumpkin kind of girl i stuck w/the pumpkin ale which was yummy but it's no match to the 1 offered at Heartland Brewery. glad to have got the chance to see Bubby and Kiks who i haven't seen in a while and also spend some time w/some non-Asians in a more pub-y setting as opposed to lounges and trendy bars i've been frequenting lately.

I frown more often now

i've recently realized that my face in its natural state is often a frown. i'll be doing nothing, not particularly sad/mad, and i'll realize the corners of my mouth are turned down. when did this start to happen? i wonder if something in my life is making me subconsciously sad...

at least 1 thing won't be causing me to frown/stress anymore (and this took place a while ago but i'm a slow updater)as the Chipmunk-Oni drama finally ended. i think the straw that broke the camel's back was the night we went out to Ultra. Oni had met an MK promoter the weekend before and there was an open bar event at Ultra being sponsored by MK so we got in for free and enjoyed 1 hr of open bar (serving only vodka and tequila-blech). there was a hilarious incident w/getting Yuka in (being that she's only 20-and yes, apparently i'm hanging out w/all young'ns now) but everything went down w/o a hitch. Chipmunk and Oni had their own awkward drama going on but they both managed to enjoy themselves. the Ultra venue is pretty nice & not too big. there's a "VIP" area which is raised above the rest a little which is referred to as a treehouse (the name alludes to something much more grand than what it actually is-i wasn't that impressed).

i was maximizing the amount of open bar for that 1 hr which resulted in me feeling a little sick, especially in a crowded venue like that. about 2 hrs in i was ready to go home. Yuka had another event to go to and so we hopped a cab over to Little West 12th and seeing the VIP-ish line at the new place, i immediately opted to just go home. Oni came w/me and she made me bibim neng myun which was so much better than anything else that could've happened that night.

o and did i mention that we left the Twins at Ultra? yea, that was the straw that broke Chipmunk's back i guess. although recently Chipmunk's been making some Facebook endeavors to Oni again...

Last Exit

on a random weekday i ran into Brantley on my way home from my Commercial Arbitration night class. she happened to be on her way out for a drink, and since she's the coolest kid around and i'm always dying to hang out w/her, she was nice enough to ask me to join along. i went upstairs to drop off my books and ran into Egg who also invited me to tag along and off we went to Last Exit.

Last Exit's the farthest i've ever been down Atlantic Ave (unless Magnetic Field's farther than Last Exit, in which case Magnetic Field's the farthest I've ever been down Atlantic Ave). i texted Institution and invited him to come along, to which he replied "we'll see but don't wait up." excuse me? such a cocky korean...

what turned into a quiet and short night out got interesting when we found out that on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month they hold an auction where ppl can bring in their junk and have it auctioned to the bar and receive the payments from the auction. while most of the stuff was pretty junky, it was still hilarious and the final item, the neon light-up Sierra Nevada sign was pretty cool and garnered around $30. right after the auction, Institution and GMoon showed up and we all stayed for another drink before finally bouncing.

Institution stopped for pizza on the way home which i didn't want to eat, except i DID want 1 of the 4 perfect pepperonis on it (it was sicilian, thus square, thus only 4 pieces of pepperoni). however, that glutton didn't want to share it w/me! i tried to grab it and a melee ensued in which 1 of the pepperonis fell victim to the ground. see, if he had just generously given it to me it wouldn't have been wasted. perhaps next time he'll know better.

and also, Egg owes me $10 for losing a bet so if anyone sees him pls be sure to remind him.

the pink black hole

i truly believe that if you hang out w/Pinky, you will get sucked into the black hole of laziness.

on a random late night outing, i was hanging out w/Pinky at his place until the wee hours of the morning. fell asleep around 7 a.m. and woke up around 1 p.m. at which time, Pinky being hungry, we ordered food. we order from a Thai place (which only has VOSS water, which cracks me up. what delivery place only has VOSS water?) and sit around watching 2 Hugh Grant movies (Love Actually and Notting Hill. such good chick flicks).

sitting there w/Pinky, i realized what a giant black hole his place is. he definitely lives a life of leisure (per se). he doesn't have to go in to the store unless something happens w/1 of his sales girls so then what could he potentially do all day and which he did the day i was there? he wakes up, orders food, watches tv and talks online, gets "other stuff" delivered to take up more of his time (you gotta love NYC for that. just about anything you can conceivably have delivered can be delivered). he doesn't even have to leave his apartment ever. i actually asked him about that, b/c by the time i'd left (b/c i'd been in the black hole long enough) he still hadn't ever once stepped outside (and it was a beautiful day), and he admitted that there were full days that he never left the apt. that's mind-boggling.

on the way home i realized what made it stick out the most. Pinky's got a pretty hot apt (it was that muggy weather period) and when he woke up he basically opted to just trudge around the apt in his boxers. and he answered the door for all the deliveries like that (for the "other stuff" that's more reasonable b/c i'm sure when they get delivery calls at 4 in the afternoon they're pretty much suspecting that your apt's a mess, you have delivery food laying around and you're not going into work any time soon). so basically, Pinky can go whole days w/o ever having to get dressed. ever. i'm completely bewildered.

Cupid Shuffle

was searching for songs to listen to while doing my Corporations reading and notes and remembered this other tidbit of a hilarious moment when i was in Cali. In the car on the way to Hollie's Mischa was driving and trying to get everyone in the mood when he started to play Cupid Shuffle. i was sitting in the back between Margaret and Hen who all of a sudden started to go NUTS when the song came on. turns out they'd 1st heard the song when they went to Puerto Vallarta and had a great time dancing to it at some club. so all of a sudden both Margaret and Hen start doing the dance in the back seat. and i was still in the middle.

it was pretty funny being forced to do the Cupid Shuffle b/c the ppl surrounding me were doing it.

Tequila is my kryptonite

near the start of school (which now feels like AGES ago even tho it's not even the end of september yet), AABANY hosted their welcome-back-to-school event at Slate and as an APALSA eboard member, i felt compelled to go. plus there were free drink tickets and free food.
Adidas and i headed over together, worried that 1Ls would show up and not recognize anyone but we were worried over nothing b/c no 1Ls showed up. bastards. Chipmunk met us there and we all started playing pool, eating food and just generally having a good time. Oni and Husband showed up later along w/Prez, all some of my favorite ppl. we also met a very pretty half-German, half-Korean waitress named Sharon so it was an overall good time and nobody wanted to stop when the event was over.

so we went to ktown. what were we thinking?

i convinced everyone to go to Players instead of Third Floor since i like the anju that Players gives us and it's not as crowded but they still play good music. i was all ready to get the Johnnie Walker/Ballantine bottle deal but the Prez and Husband (both koreans) wanted the Patron Silver deal. and i totally caved. that's what happens when you date a korean guy for a year. you just compromise a lot instead of butting heads. i definitely didn't take many of those shots but at the end of the night Oni and Adidas were rocked and i was harboring a very strong buzz. we meandered over to Kunjip afterwards and ate some food and drank some more baek saeju and then all headed home. since we were 4+1 and the cabbie was giving us trouble bout it, i just hopped out and got my own cab.
on the way home i realized i was pretty damn rocked myself and promptly threw up when i got home.
