Bringing it Back to School

compared to the olden days (my 1st year), student orgs at BLS haven't been as active in organizing bar events and outtings. it seems to be reflecting the student body, the make-up of which has changed drastically since my 1st year. more and more, BLS students are less interested in socializing as a student body and more and more about study groups, job fairs, and workshops/seminars. while this is all fine and dandy, when did BLS students become so boring? i remember, as a 1st year, there was always something to go to at Floyd's, Magnetic Field, Last Exit, Brazen Head, or Trout, just to tick off a few. yes, the neighborhood's changed (no more Trout or Magnetic Field), but more importantly, it's the characteristics of the students that's changed even more. step it up people. i'm not saying don't study or do work, just learn to balance! it's not that hard.

the only 2 events i really remember being held as bar events in Brooklyn was a Back to School held at Deity and a Bar Review night held at Ceol (which seems to have become the new Floyd's for BLS).

i've only been to Deity this 1 time, and i truly think once is enough. the venue seems completely displaced in it's attempt as a wannabe Manhattan bar. and the prices are similar too. there's a dance floor downstairs and a sort-of lounge upstairs. it wasn't bad, but i wouldn't actually call it good either. if i hadn't been there with people i liked, or if i hadn't run into someone who kept buying me drinks, i would not have stayed there as long as i did. i still eventually left and headed to Brazen Head, but i don't really remember what happened and i didn't stay long because i was in such a state.recently, BLSPI hosted its own event at Ceol, which took place after a wine and cheese event hosted by SBA. i have to admit, while the outdoor bar events have dwindled in number since my 1st year, the free food and drinks events have remained on par. and this 1 was no exception. i hadn't eaten much that day (never good when faced with unlimited wine) and only managed to nab 5 cubes of cheese before it was all depleted. so it's no surprise that i have no recollection as to why it took so long from when the SBA event ended and when i got to Ceol. apparently there was a 2 hr lapse. what was i doing? no idea.

i do remember running into Tongsen on the way to the bar and she bought me fries from Carroll Gardens Diner, which was much needed. then we headed over to Ceol together.

the climax of the night was when we all headed over to Brazen Head together. it was a freezing night and BGA started to run so i started to jog with him. in high heel boots. while very drunk.

not a very good idea.

i kept wanting to stop but BGA kept egging me on. the ends did not justify the means in this case. as soon as i got to Brazen i promptly threw up. suffice it to say, it was another night where i didn't stay long at Brazen before i just went home and passed out.

call me Cho Chang

i'm not usually a Halloween person. i tend to like to go trick-or-treating with my little sis or other kids but other than that i'm not a big dress-up-for-Halloween kind of person. so it's surprising that i broke the mold this year, but i did. my intention was to construct a costume where i didn't have to purchase anything additional and wouldn't have to spend much time getting ready or preparing. and i succeeded in that. however, the final result was a little...mixed.
the only reason i dressed up at all was to attend the BLSPI talent show. i had a great time last year, and this year was no exception, altho the set-up this year felt a little sloppier than last year. regardless, there's always a few costumes that ppl come up with that i find truly ingenious. for instance, Egg was the guy from No Country For Old Men, and what's even more impressive is that he came up with the costume and idea only a few hours before he showed up at the event. yes, there was a Juno and Bleeker, which was cute but i didn't think it deserved to win. and when i showed up in the city, apparently it wasn't that novel of a costume idea either, because there were more than a few Junos and Bleekers. after drinking our fill of beers and wine, we headed over to the after-party at Mansion, which was held jointly with surrounding law schools. the turnout was actually really good, but then the downside was of course how packed it was because so many ppl showed up.
i could see why the planners picked Mansion as the venue, and it was adequately big, but i think i've outgrown places where i can't move around without almost getting into a fight with someone because it's so packed. if you know me, i'm not usually out to start a fight (plus i'd probably get my ass whooped), but i did almost get into 2 fights that night, both times with obnoxious girls. go figure. i promise i don't go out seeking confrontation but if you want to start it, i'm not gonna just run away, even if you could kick my ass.speaking of ass kicking, what the hell is going on with this brooklyn neighborhood. this is my 3rd year living here and i've never encountered any violence or shadiness but all of a sudden 2 ppl i go to school with got their asses kicked and mugged for no reason. granted, 1 of them was while he was out in the LES, but the other 1 was right on Boerum Place while the poor guy was walking home from the BLS library. that's completely unacceptable. and so sad. that poor boy. and apparently it took place around 10 pm on saturday night, which you would think, since he was less than 3 blocks away from our apartment building, he could get back and forth in relative safety. word is that it was a gang of little 16 yr old boys who stole his phone and wallet and maybe an iPod. wtf is going on? it just breaks my heart a little, particularly since he's Six's friend which makes it hit even closer to home.
in light of the above, i should consider myself very lucky for having gotten home safely after the party at Mansion around Halloween. the place was just too overwhelming and pricey ($40 for 2 mixed drinks) and DRC was too wasted and Cubed was too somber and i just wanted to leave. so i said my goodbyes and bounced out before i could be talked into staying, which is pretty stupid considering it was around 1:30 am and i was definitely not completely sober. how not sober was i? as i was walking towards the subway from Mansion, first i realized i walked in the wrong direction, which is always bad news in the Meatpacking District. then i turned back around, but couldn't find my iPod and believed i lost it so i was determined to go to the 24-hour iPod store in Columbus Circle to buy another one (i even called Egg for directions). i hopped into a cab only to find my iPod in my bag while in the cab so i promptly hopped out and found myself in Ktown where i bought some kimbap and soda and took the subway home. it was a weird mini-adventure to have. did i mention i was wearing my Halloween costume the whole time this was happening?
o yea, my costume. i had planned to just go as a catholic school girl since that only requires a plaid skirt, a tie, a sweater vest/cardigan, and mary janes and i happen to have all those things (sans the sweater vest). but when i showed up, ppl kept trying to guess what i was and every time it was something different: a kindergardener, a Harry Potter character, Cho Chang from Harry Potter, a Japanese school girl, etc. so every 10 minutes i kept changing what i was.

a pounding headache

i'm hiding out in my room for exams, but i'm still not being very productive. as evidenced by this entry. so sad can't make it to Stitch's holiday party at Opus 22. come to think of it, i missed it last year too b/c of exams. i'm also missing Debs' friend's holiday party. sigh. it's at this amazing apt located right near Union Square above the Chase Bank. you can't miss it. it looks like the kind of apt that exists in movies about 20-somethings living in Manhattan. except this person's real. and friends w/Debs.

since i can't go to these fun events, i'll just reminisce about an event that i've been meaning to write about for a while but hadn't gotten around to it: BLSPI Talent Show. i didn't go last yr, but decided to go this yr and help out (yes, i'm actually part of another org aside from APALSA). turns out they really didn't need my help but i stayed and Brantley and Ol' met me there. i was still on antibiotics from the plague at that time and i remember i was feeling pretty loopy from just 2 beers (yea antiobiotics!). the show was pretty good:
1. Chase Honeycup sang and played guitar. funny antics ensued involving the mic stand and Chase's height
2. BLS has its very own Jewish lawyer version of Eminem! he was actually really good and i'm kicking myself for not remembering his name. it was something hysterical...
3. the girl who should've won was actually something totally unplanned. some random girl was running towards the stage during intermission and took a massive digger. that everyone saw. i know it's mean to laugh at the person who falls, but it was funny. and for some reason the way it happened/how she did it was so that nobody there didn't see it
4. Institution did TaeKwonDo. umm, at least i think it was Tae Kwan Do...think he'll kick my ass if i misquote it? he does take it really seriously...
5. asians breakdancing. yea, you heard me right. well, actually, 1 asian. but still impressive. i remember Buddy and i rushing to the front and grabbing seats in the 1st row when it was time for breakdancers. we're such a couple of groupies.

so yea, the event was fun as a whole. but of course the really fun stuff happens afterwards, when everyone goes out for more drinks. we started out at Brazen Head which was completely packed. Egg and i walked there together w/some others and an argument got started about who should've won the talent show which somehow snowballed into an argument about gender and social trends. awkward. once it got too serious i just stayed neutral but Egg seemed pretty mad and left not long after getting to the bar.

or wait, did he? things were pretty chaotic. i remember stealing Buddy's hat and wearing it around and then Kinky and i got completely engrossed in a conversation about antics related to his name. this conversation was actually how Kinky got this nickname. and recently i found out from Egg that Kinky's got an Asian fetish. maybe that's why we were having that convo. hmmm...

we later travelled to Floyd's where i kept bugging Buddy, and in retrospect, i might've been cockblocking him. my bad... afterwards, Kinky and i went to Brantley's to potentially drink some more. then something weird happened.

Kinky and i were talking while walking into the elevator and then Brantley walked in w/this random guy. i could swear they were talking when i saw them. then he went w/us to Brantley's and we sat around drinking wine and Brantley was hiding out in the kitchen w/Kinky when the topic of pancakes came up but Brantley claimed to be too drunk to make them. then things were all of a sudden weird-like the atmosphere was weird. Kinky said he'd be leaving and the random guy went w/him.

now, the whole time i'd just assumed that Brantley knew this guy; that they'd met at Floyd's or just knew him from BLS since he lived in Feil. but nope. he was just some random guy. Kinky came back to Brantley's about 15 mins later which makes me realize how oblivious i am (that Kinky knew to draw this guy away but to come back). Brantley made us pancakes (yea!) and then i headed home where i passed right out b/c by that time i'd started to get that wine-related pounding headache.

as a post-script i was recently informed that that night was a just a fluke for random weird guy and he's actually very cool. who knew?
